False allegations are a grave sin: Mirza Abbas to NCP leaders
“Elders teach us that lying is a great sin. So do not lie,” Abbas said
Referring to NCP leaders, Prime Minister's Political Adviser and BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas said that making false allegations against others is a serious sin and urged political opponents to refrain from spreading misinformation.
He made the remarks this afternoon (6 March) while addressing a doa and iftar gathering organised by Ramna Thana BNP at the Siddheshwari Girls' School ground in the capital, where prayers were offered for the late prime minister Khaleda Zia.
"Elders teach us that lying is a great sin. So do not lie," Abbas said, apparently referring to his electoral rival Nasiruddin Patwary and leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP).
"Slandering someone with false accusations is an even greater sin. Please keep yourselves away from such wrongdoing and keep us away from it as well," Abbas said.
The event was presided over by Ramna Thana BNP convener Ashraful Islam and moderated by member secretary Mohammad Shamim Hossain. Leaders and activists of the city and local BNP units were also present.
Abbas alleged that his opponents could not have secured such a large number of votes in his constituency without electoral irregularities.
"If there had been no vote rigging in my area, they would not have received so many votes," he said, referring to the Dhaka-8 constituency.
"You cannot even name a relative in one ward who voted for you, but I can tell you exactly who voted for me," he added.
He also claimed that BNP activists guarded several polling centres at night to prevent ballot stuffing.
"We protected the votes by guarding some schools that were used as polling centres. Otherwise, they would have stuffed ballots in all the centres," he said, alleging that the election had been manipulated through "strange forms of election engineering."
Abbas further said he had never lost an election in his area and questioned how his opponents secured so many votes without manipulation.
"I can prove that there was vote rigging," he added.
