Advisers think political parties are puppets: Fakhrul
He says referendum before election would be unacceptable
The advisers of the interim government think that political parties in Bangladesh have turned into puppets, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today (6 November).
The Advisory Council issued an ultimatum asking parties to reach consensus after the signing of the July Charter through the Consensus Commission, he said at a memorial for former BNP leader and ex-minister Tarikul Islam at Jashore Town Hall.
"The advisers seem to believe that political parties have become their puppets but that is not true," said the BNP leader.
He said the BNP has endured a lot but it is not a political party that has been floating without roots. "We do politics by earning the trust of the people. If anyone thinks we can be ignored, they are wrong," he added.
At the event, Fakhrul also warned that any attempt to disrupt the upcoming national election would be met with a firm response from the party.
"BNP is ready to mobilise the people to counter any attempt to derail the polls," he said.
He called on the government to immediately restore democratic processes and safeguard citizens' rights, warning that any pre-election referendum could destabilise the country.
Fakhrul added that the government must demonstrate its capability by holding a smooth and fair election, adding that delays or obstructions would have "dire consequences."
He reiterated that a referendum before the national election would be unacceptable, cautioning that such a move could spark instability. However, he added that a referendum could be held on the day of the parliamentary election to ensure transparency.
Paying tribute to Tarikul Islam, Fakhrul remembered the late leader as a lifelong fighter for democracy and the welfare of the people.
He described him as a rare figure whose guidance remains sorely missed in Bangladesh. "Such leaders appear only in crucial moments of history. Today, his guidance is desperately needed," he said.
The event, chaired by District BNP President Syed Saberul Haque Sabu, was also addressed by BNP Central Deputy Secretary for Religious Affairs Amlendu Das Apu, the party's former Information Secretary Mofiqul Hasan Tripti, Krishak Dal Central Joint Secretary Engineer TS Ayub, Jhikargachha Thana BNP President Sabira Nazmul Munni, and former Chhatra Dal President Kazi Rawnkul Islam Shraban.
