'Emphasised safe repatriation': Jamaat clarifies statement on independent Arakan State for Rohingyas
The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has clarified its statement regarding the Rohingyas, stating that the intention was to emphasise their safe and dignified repatriation.
During a meeting with the Chinese Communist Party at a city hotel yesterday, Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Md Taher said, "Around 1.2 million Rohingyas are now here in Bangladesh. They are living a very inhumane life. We said that providing food and shelter is not a solution."
He said the solution was to settle them in "their own land", proposing a new independent Arakan State.
In its statement today (28 April), Jamaat said, "During the press briefing, the intention was to emphasise the need for a dignified and safe repatriation of the Rohingyas who have taken refuge in Bangladesh, and to establish a safe zone for them in their homeland.
"If the remarks have caused any misunderstanding, I hope this statement will resolve it. This is the position of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami."
