Depoliticisation threat to democracy: Tarique Rahman urges interim govt to announce election roadmap
“Why is there a delay in declaring the election plan? This is creating restlessness and dissatisfaction among the people,” said the BNP acting chairperson

BNP's Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman has warned that the ongoing trend of depoliticisation poses a serious threat to the country's democracy.
He urged the interim government to promptly announce a clear roadmap for national elections and take the initiative to present political parties before the people.
The BNP acting chairperson expressed concern over the delay in election-related actions while speaking virtually today (2 May) at an event marking the founding anniversary of the Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party.
"Why is there a delay in declaring the election plan? This is creating restlessness and dissatisfaction among the people," he said. "It is the responsibility of the interim government to act now."
Tarique reiterated that the BNP has always advocated for a government elected by direct public vote.
"Yet the current environment is such that even demanding an election feels like a crime," he added.
He further noted that when it comes to the national interest, all political parties stand united.

Welcoming 25 new political parties that have emerged in the political landscape after 5 August, the BNP acting chairperson said, "There may be differences in ideology, but we expect all parties to work together in the interest of the country."
Expressing deep concern over the resurgence of authoritarian forces, Tarique questioned what steps the interim government has taken against constitutional violations.
"If the current government fails to act, the next elected government must ensure accountability for the fallen autocrats," he asserted.
Tarique Rahman concluded by stressing that every political party supports democratic reform. "But if political parties are disregarded, the country risks slipping further into depoliticisation," he warned.
He called on the interim government to ensure that political parties can face the people's verdict through free and fair elections.
The event was presided over by AB Party Chairman Mojibur Rahman Monju. Other speakers included Mustafa Jamal Haider, Chairman of Jatiya Party (Zafar faction); Mahmudur Rahman Manna, President of Nagorik Oikya; Nahid Islam, Convener of National Citizens Party (NCP); Saiful Haque, General Secretary of the Revolutionary Workers Party; Zonayed Saki, Chief Coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolon; Dr. Dilary Chowdhury, noted political scientist; Maulana Mamunul Haque, Ameer of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis; Nurul Haque Nur, President of Gono Adhikar Parishad; Ahmad Abdul Quader, Secretary General of Khelafat Majlis; and AB Party General Secretary Asaduzzaman Fuad.
