Chhatra Dal suspends EC siege after assurance on demands
Chhatra Dal President Rakib said the decision was taken following consultations within the central committee and at the request of the EC.
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has suspended its ongoing siege of the Election Commission (EC) building, which was launched in protest over three key demands.
The BNP's student wing announced a temporary halt to its programme this evening (19 January).
Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib said the decision was taken following consultations within the central committee and at the request of the Election Commission.
He warned that the organisation would respond if any group attempted to exert pressure on the commission through "improper tactics."
Rakib said a Chhatra Dal delegation met the EC's senior secretary on Saturday, who assured them that the demands would be taken into consideration.
He added that yesterday, Additional Secretary K M Ali Newaz informed them that changes would be made to the domestic postal ballot system.
The protest, which began last Sunday, focused on allegations of bias and questionable decisions by the EC regarding postal ballots, claims of hasty decisions made under pressure from a political group that undermine the commission's independence, and concerns over unprecedented notifications related to the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Central Students' Union (Sucsu) election, which Chhatra Dal said threatened democratic practices on campus.
Earlier in the day, the Sucsu election was postponed amid the ongoing tensions.
