The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has expressed regret if any of the organisation's activists were involved in the recent clash between private university students and National Citizen Party leader Sarjis Alam and his followers at North South University.

"We have learned that the incident involving Sarjis Alam at North South University occurred between him and general students of private universities," JCD General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir said during a press briefing at the JCD central office in the capital's Nayapaltan today (7 March).

"Whenever an untoward incident occurs on any campus, the media immediately associates Chhatra Dal with it. Since 5 August, we have been promoting positive politics on every campus," he added.

Nasir also criticised the formation of new student political groups, stating that they lack true innovation in leadership and are merely selecting leaders rather than electing them.

"Yesterday, Shibir's general secretary claimed that they spend Tk3 lakh daily on iftar for general students. This amounts to Tk90 lakh in a month. We want to know the source of their funding," Nasir added.

JCD President Rakibul Hasan said Sarjis Alam visited North South University around 10pm when most Muslims were engaged in Tarawih prayers.

"We believe his visit at that time was pre-planned," he said.

Clash erupts over Sarjis Alam’s presence near North South University

On 6 March, a group of private university students engaged in a clash when Sarjis Alam, chief organiser (North) of the National Citizen Party, and his followers went to the Bashundhara Residential Area of the capital late at night, according to police.

Both the parties went to the Bhatara Police Station to file complaints following the clash, said the station's Officer-in-Charge Mazharul Islam.

"Both parties came to the police station to file complaints about the altercation. Sarjis Alam was also present. Both sides are blaming each other, and we are reviewing their claims," the OC said.

Meanwhile, in a post on his Facebook profile, Sarjis alleged that a central leader of JCD and his associates attacked the politician and his companions.

He said the clash took place near the North South University (NSU) entrance.
