BNP's Salahuddin says referendum must for constitutional amendments
Salahuddin stated that although the parliament has the authority to change the basic structure of the Constitution, the Article 142 makes it mandatory to hold a referendum on such changes.

Any constitutional amendment in the next parliament must be ratified through a referendum, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said today (17 September).
Following a dialogue of the National Consensus Commission in Dhaka, Salahuddin said today's discussions centered on three issues, including constitution order, holding a referendum on election day, and a post-election referendum on constitutional changes.
Salahuddin stated that although the parliament has the authority to change the basic structure of the Constitution, the Article 142 makes it mandatory to hold a referendum on such changes.
"Whatever is adopted, another referendum must be held after the constitutional amendment. This means there will be two referendums on the same issue. If we leave the matter unresolved, it will only benefit the ousted fascist forces," he added.
Salahuddin also noted that one year has passed since the formation of the interim government, which was sworn in by the president following the Supreme Court's opinion.
"Raising questions about this now is nothing more than baseless street rhetoric," he remarked.
