BNP leader goes on hunger strike over Manikganj-1 nomination
The protesters alleged that the party leadership ignored experienced grassroots leaders in favour of a controversial nominee, describing the decision as “suicidal” for the party
BNP leader Dr Khandaker Akbar Hossain Bablu, along with local residents, has begun a hunger strike demanding a review of the party's nominated candidate for the Manikganj-1 (Ghior–Daulatpur–Sreenagar) parliamentary constituency.
The protest was held today (18 December) in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka. Dr Bablu is the eldest son of the late BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain.
The protesters alleged that the party leadership ignored experienced grassroots leaders in favour of a controversial nominee, describing the decision as "suicidal" for the party. They said Khandaker Delwar Hossain played a key role during the BNP's most difficult period, and that Dr Bablu has long been actively involved in organisational work alongside local activists.
They further claimed that the current nominee is allegedly involved in extortion, land grabbing and other controversial activities in the constituency. Warning that such a nomination could jeopardise the party's electoral prospects, the protesters said the BNP's symbol, the paddy sheaf, may struggle to secure victory in the seat.
The demonstrators demanded that the party cancel the existing nomination and instead nominate Dr Bablu as the BNP candidate for Manikganj-1.
Speaking at the programme, Dr Bablu said, "My father, Khandaker Delwar Hossain, led the party through its most challenging times, risking his family's and personal safety during 2007–2009. Since his passing, I have continued to stand by the leaders and activists of Manikganj. I hope the BNP will acknowledge my dedication and our family's contribution."
He added that the hunger strike would continue until the party meets their demands.
