BNP creating confusion over reforms: Jamaat's Taher
Criticising BNP, Dr Taher said, "They are putting pressure on the government, rejecting reforms, and refusing to accept the decisions made by the authorities. They have even refused to recognise the RPO, and the referendum organised to endorse the reform agenda"
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Nayeb-e-Ameer and former member of parliament Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher has accused the BNP of creating unnecessary confusion over political reforms.
"Everything about the reform process was settled. Both we [Jamaat] and BNP had agreed. Suddenly, BNP reversed its stance, claiming that a page had been added to the document. This is nothing but an attempt to create confusion. After everything was finalised, BNP is now reopening debates and generating new doubts," he said.
If the election is derailed, those who are conspiring, particularly from India, will get a chance to destabilise the country
He made the remarks this morning (31 October) while addressing a gathering of polling centre officials of Chauddagram Upazila at the Central Medical College auditorium in Cumilla Sadar.
Criticising BNP, Dr Taher said, "They are putting pressure on the government, rejecting reforms, and refusing to accept the decisions made by the authorities. They have even refused to recognise the Representation of the People Order (RPO), and the referendum organised to endorse the reform agenda."
On the issue of the referendum, the former Jamaat lawmaker said, "When we proposed holding a referendum on the reforms, BNP initially agreed. We wanted the people to decide on the reforms through a referendum — that's why we wanted it before the national election.
"But now BNP insists that the referendum and election must be held on the same day. They are mixing two completely different processes — like combining palm and mango juices together," he stated.
Regarding the national election, the Jamaat leader added, "I don't understand what BNP stands to gain if the election doesn't take place. If the election is derailed, those who are conspiring, particularly from India, will get a chance to destabilise the country."
The event was chaired by Upazila Jamaat Ameer Md Mahfuzur Rahman. Among others, Cumilla regional team member and former district ameer Abdus Sattar, Central Majlish-e-Shura member and Cumilla South district Ameer Mohammad Shahjahan, Cumilla City Jamaat Secretary Md Mahbubur Rahman, Bangladesh Workers Welfare Federation Central Vice President Mojibur Rahman Bhuiyan, and former Chauddagram Upazila ameer Shahab Uddin also spoke at the event.
