A Jubo Dal activist was shot dead and 10 others were injured during a clash between Jubo Dal and Swecchasebak Dal members over establishing supremacy in Narayanganj's Rupganj upazila.

The incident happened at Chanpara Rehabilitation Centre under Kayetpara union in the upazila around 3am today (19 march).

The deceased was identified as Hasib, son of Anwar Hossain from the area.

Mehedi Islam, senior assistant superintendent of police in Narayanganj said, "Police immediately reached the spot after being informed of the clash at Chanpara area in Narayanganj. We are currently conducting drives in the area. The accused will be arrested and brought to justice."

According to locals, a long-standing enmity and a tense situation had been prevailing between Jubo Dal's Shamim group and Swecchasebak Dal's Rabbani group over gaining control of the area's drugs and extortion businesses along with establishing supremacy in the area.

Last night, Shamim's men picked up Robin, a drug trader in the area and a member of Rabbani group, leading to the clash.

Babu, elder brother of the deceased and a Jubo Dal activist, said, "Locals detained drug trader Robin at night. Swecchasebak Dal leader Rabbani and his men tried to free him, which resulted into a clash between the two sides, killing my brother."

Rafiqul Islam, convener of Rupganj upazila unit of Swecchasebak Dal, said, "I have heard about the clash between the two groups. Rabbani is associated with Swecchasebak Dal's politics and Shamim is a member of Jubo Dal. Organisational actions will be taken after proper investigation of the incident. The culprits must face legal action."
