Police warn of rising WhatsApp scams using names of govt officials
The Police Headquarters emphasised that having a prominent person’s photo or name on a WhatsApp profile does not verify the authenticity of the number
The Police Headquarters has issued an urgent warning to the public about a growing trend of fraudsters impersonating government officials on WhatsApp.
According to recent complaints, scammers are using the names and photos of senior government figures to send messages demanding money, said a statement today (6 November).
The Police Headquarters emphasised that having a prominent person's photo or name on a WhatsApp profile does not verify the authenticity of the number.
Citizens are advised not to respond to such messages and to remain vigilant against online fraud.
The Bangladesh Police stated that they are on high alert and will take strict legal action against individuals involved in these fraudulent schemes.
Public cooperation and awareness are key to preventing digital deception, the statement added.
