PM receives warm reception in Sylhet, set to launch Family Card programme
During the visit, the prime minister will attend Family Card distribution programmes and a public gathering in Moulvibazar
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman received a warm reception as he arrived in Sylhet this morning (17 June) to attend the inauguration programmes of the Family Card initiative in Sreemangal and Moulvibazar, where he was welcomed by local politicians, public representatives and government officials.
Confirming the matter, Sylhet District BNP President and Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury said members of parliament from different constituencies in Sylhet, including National Parliament Chief Whip GK Gaus, senior leaders of the Sylhet district and metropolitan BNP units, as well as top administrative officials, including the divisional commissioner, police commissioner and deputy commissioner, were present at the airport to welcome the prime minister.
After arriving in Sylhet, the prime minister travelled by road to Sreemangal in Moulvibazar district. During the journey, leaders and activists of the ruling party gathered at various points across Sylhet city to greet him.
A large number of tea garden workers also stood on both sides of the road carrying flowers near the Malnicherra Tea Estate area to welcome the prime minister.
The visit created a festive atmosphere across Sylhet, with BNP leaders and activists from affiliated organisations assembling along roadsides from early morning to greet the prime minister. As his motorcade passed through the city, supporters chanted slogans, while some showered flowers on his vehicle.
According to the schedule, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to attend a Family Card distribution programme at Victoria High School ground in Sreemangal at 1pm. At the event, Family Cards will be distributed among 155 families from Ward No 1 of Mirzapur union in Sreemangal Upazila.
He will later participate in another Family Card distribution event in Moulvibazar sadar. There, cards will be distributed to 152 families in Ward No 7 of Tengra Union in Rajnagar Upazila.
The prime minister is also scheduled to hold a meeting with party leaders at DuSai Resort following the programmes.
After the meeting, the premier will return to Sylhet and depart for Dhaka from Sylhet Osmani International Airport in the evening.
Meanwhile, extensive preparations have been undertaken in Sreemangal ahead of the prime minister's visit. Authorities have expedited work related to stage construction, brick surfacing, beautification efforts, installation of security arrangements, and cleaning of roads and important establishments in the town.
This is his first visit to the district as Prime Minister after the BNP formed the government with a landslide victory in the 12 February general election.
Tea workers brave rain to welcome PM with flowers in Sylhet
Rows of tea garden workers stood along the roadside holding flowers to welcome Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during his visit to Sylhet.
Most of the workers, many of them women, gathered in the Chowkidekhi area carrying flower garlands and baskets filled with flower petals. They left their work to greet the prime minister as his motorcade travelled from Sylhet Osmani International Airport towards Sreemangal.
"The country's leader has come to Sylhet. That's why we have left our work and are standing here with flowers," said tea worker Murali.
As the motorcade passed through the lush tea garden area, workers from the Lakkatura and Malnicherra tea estates showered the prime minister's vehicle with flower garlands and petals.
Despite the rain, the workers stood by the roadside, playing musical instruments and waving flowers as they welcomed the prime minister.
