Pilkhana carnage: 14 more ex-BDR members released on bail from Kashimpur jail
One ex-BDR member was released from Kashimpur-1 and thirteen from Kashimpur-2 today (15 October), said Al Mamun Senior Jail Superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail-2.
Fourteen former Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) members were released today (15 October) from Kashimpur jail in Gazipur on bail in connection with a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act over the Pilkhana carnage in 2009.
One ex-BDR member was released from Kashimpur-1 and thirteen from Kashimpur-2, said Al Mamun Senior Jail Superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail-2.
The released personnel include Mohammad Sarwar Hossain from Jhenaidah, Sheikh Farid and Arafat from Netrokona, Shekhar Prasad Chowdhury from Chattogram, Abdul Quader from Pabna, Sirajul Islam from Jashore, Shafiqul Islam from Chuadanga, Aminul Islam from Bogura, and Ziaul Haque from Jamalpur.
The names of four others were not disclosed.
Earlier, 218 ex-BDR personnel had been released on bail in the explosives case.
On 25-26 February 2009, 74 people, including 57 army officers, were killed in a mutiny at the Border Guard Headquarters in Pilkhana.
Following the incident, two separate cases were filed under murder and explosives laws. A total of 850 individuals were charged.
On 5 November 2013, a Dhaka court awarded death sentences to 152 BDR members and two civilians, and life imprisonment to 160 others in a murder case.
On 27 November 2017, the High Court confirmed the death penalty for 139 out of 152 accused.
The final verdicts are pending at the Appellate Division.
