PHP SBRIL celebrates 5 years of green ship recycling without a single incident
The Chattogram-based facility, certified by the Japanese classification authority ClassNK since 2020, is globally regarded as one of the most advanced shipbreaking yards

PHP Ship Breaking and Recycling Industries Ltd (PHP SBRIL), a concern of the PHP Family, celebrated five years of continuous compliance with the Hong Kong International Convention (HKC) — without a single incident or accident, a major milestone in environmentally responsible ship recycling.
The Chattogram-based facility, certified by the Japanese classification authority ClassNK since 2020, is widely regarded as one of the most advanced and eco-friendly shipbreaking yards in the world.
Dr Yamaguchi, executive vice president of ClassNK, attended as the chief guest of the event held on Wednesday, while Takahashi Naoki, minister and deputy chief of Mission at the Japanese Embassy in Bangladesh, was present as the special guest.
The celebration also brought together top officials from leading global maritime and trading companies, including MOL, NYK Line, K Line, Mitsui & Co, and JFE Shoji Corp, along with senior ClassNK officials from both Japan and Bangladesh.
In his remarks, Yamaguchi said, "PHP SBRIL, the first ClassNK-certified yard in Bangladesh, has set an industry benchmark. Since our entry into Bangladesh in 2018, we've witnessed real transformation in green ship recycling, inspired by PHP's example. We remain committed to supporting the sector's future growth."
Takahashi Naoki praised PHP's leadership in safe and eco-friendly shipbreaking.
"Through tireless and sincere efforts, PHP has proven that ship recycling can be both environmentally sound and safe for workers. We hope other yards will follow PHP's lead in advancing the sector," he remarked.
Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, chairman of the PHP Family, opined the achievement reflected the company's values.
"At PHP, we firmly believe that business growth must align with our duty to people and the planet. This achievement reaffirms our commitment to sustainability, compliance, and labour dignity. We are proud to showcase a global standard from Bangladesh," he said.
In his welcome address, Md Zahirul Islam, managing director of PHP SBRIL, highlighted strategic investments of over $14 million in infrastructure upgrades, safety system modernisation, and environmental compliance.
He also noted the successful recycling of three ocean-going vessels from Japanese shipping giants MOL and NYK — all completed without any incident or accident.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment to promoting Bangladesh as a global leader in safe and sustainable ship recycling.
