A man has drowned in Gulshan Lake while attempting to flee after stealing a mobile phone.

The deceased was identified as Sharif Ahmed, 27, hailing from North Keroa village of Raipura police station in Lakshmipur district, lived in a rented house in Karail slum in Dhaka.

Fire Service and Civil Defense zone-3 official Shafiqul Islam confirmed the incident and said, "After snatching the mobile phone this morning the thief got caught. Fearing being beaten by a mob, he jumped into the water while trying to flee. He drowned in the lake after swimming some distance."

The fire service diving team found his body in the water of the lake after searching for five hours. However, failing to recover the body, the operation was declared over at 3:25pm.

However, his body was found floating in the lake around 4pm, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gulshan police Mazharul Islam.
