People must vote 'Yes' in referendum if they truly want reforms: Rizwana
Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan has urged citizens to participate in the July Charter referendum, to be held simultaneously with the general election, saying those who genuinely want reforms must vote "Yes."
Speaking this morning (11 January) while speaking as a guest at the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Citizen Award 2025 ceremony, Rizwana noted that on 12 February, voters will cast two ballots: one to choose their member of parliament and the other in the referendum.
The referendum is a moment of decision to shift the balance of power in Bangladesh away from the ruling elite and towards the people, she said. "Everyone must participate, and if you truly want reforms, the answer must be 'Yes.'"
She warned that remaining silent, inactive or voting "No" will mean missing a rare opportunity to restore balance in society, possibly for many years.
Rizwana, also the water resources adviser, urged citizens to read and understand the proposed reform measures, noting that the government has prepared extensive publicity and explanatory notes on the proposals.
She said attempts will be made to intimidate voters and discourage participation, claiming that signs of voter fear are already evident.
"We vote, and then we complain that our leaders are not good. That cannot continue. We must vote for good leaders," she said.
Highlighting the role of young voters, she said the youth, who helped free the country from authoritarianism in 2024, must now play a key role in strengthening democracy through reform.
The fall of authoritarianism alone does not bring democracy, she said, adding that every citizen must be conscious and vigilant in exercising their voting rights for democracy to take root.
Speaking at the same event, Local Government Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan said voting "Yes" in the referendum is essential to prevent a return to enforced disappearances, secret detention centres and torture.
