‘Pay salary, bonus before Eid’

The Ministry of Labour and Employment on Monday called upon factory owners to pay salary and bonus to their workers before the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, likely to be celebrated on August 12.

“You have to pay the salary for the month of July and the Eid bonus before the festival,” Monnujan Sufian, state minister for the ministry of labour, told the businesspersons at a meeting of the Crisis Management Core Committee, held at the ministry’s conference room. She also asked the factory owners to make sure that workers gets the payment.

Representatives of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), and trade union leaders, among others, were present at the meeting.

KM Ali Azam, secretary in-charge to the ministry, said that it has been decided to form monitoring cells under the Department of Labour and the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments.

He said the factory owners at the meeting have agreed to pay salary and allowances before Eid. The secretary also said that the date for the payment of salary and allowance by the owners will be fixed at the next meeting of the Crisis Management Core Committee.

The secretary said, a discussion will be held in the next meeting on the issue of declaring Eid holidays by factories in phases to avoid excessive pressure of transports on the highways.
