A part of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in the Airport area of the on Airport-Gazipur route has been opened for light and medium vehicles to ease traffic congestion before the Eid holidays.

A total of 683 metres of the BRT project including ramps and main sections was unofficially opened Wednesday morning considering the suffering of Mymensingh-bound passengers before Eid, Safiqul Islam told The Business Standard.

The Dhaka-bound section of the same line will also be opened after Eid, he said.

Mentioning that the vertical clearance of the section is 2.5 meters, he said large buses, trucks and vehicles with goods are restricted at the elevated section.

Visiting the newly opened section, it was observed that a metal barrier has been installed to block large vehicles at the entrance of the road. Several cargo vans were seen turning away from the entrance.

The BRT project was approved in 2012 with a target of completion by 2015. However, the cost has been doubled in several phases and the date has been extended to 2024.

Due to this project, it was feared that the suffering of people will increase during Eid.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has also expressed his anger more than once due to the suffering caused by this project.
