The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Shipping has recommended that action be taken to remove garbage and polythene from the Buriganga and Karnaphuli rivers by collecting grab dredgers on an urgent basis.
The recommendation was made at the 27th meeting of the parliamentary committee at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Thursday. Major (retd) Rafiqul Islam, chairman of the committee, presided over the meeting.
Committee members State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Dr Samil Uddin Ahmed Shimul and SM Shahzada were also present at the meeting.

The committee discussed the Chattogram Port Authority's development plan, implementation, development activities, audit objections and recruitment of manpower. Then it recommended presenting the details of the audit objections at the next meeting and taking steps for recruitment and promotion activities for the vacant posts.
The committee also suggested the ministry to take necessary steps to remove waterlogging in the port city of Chattogram through coordination with the Chattogram Development Authority and Chattogram Port Authority.
The secretary of the Ministry of Shipping, concerned officials of the ministry and heads of various agencies also attended the meeting.
