Parliament may sit on Fridays to meet ordinance deadline, says chief whip
He said the Jatiya Sangsad is currently under pressure to pass 133 ordinances within 30 days of the start of the first session as per Article 93 of the Constitution, adding that 44 ordinances have already been passed.
Parliament may hold two sittings a day on Fridays if needed to pass pending ordinances within the constitutional deadline, Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni said today (8 April).
Speaking to reporters at the parliament building, he said the Jatiya Sangsad is currently under pressure to pass 133 ordinances within 30 days of the start of the first session as per Article 93 of the Constitution, adding that 44 ordinances have already been passed.
To speed up the process, multiple ordinances are being merged and presented as bills, and additional sessions will be held to meet the deadline, he added.
On reserved women's seats, the chief whip said the BNP-led alliance may receive 36 seats, which will be distributed among alliance partners.
"Priority will be given to experienced and dedicated women leaders who have been active in movements over the past 17 years, while ensuring representation from all segments of society. Final nominations will be decided by the party chief," he added.
He also said allegations of serious irregularities and corruption have been found in the parliament's sound system. These include awarding work to an unskilled firm, supplying equipment that does not match specifications, and irregularities in the tender process.
Action will be taken after the current session to avoid disruption, he said.
On the Anti-Terrorism Act passed today, he said the government believes in avoiding revenge politics.
He added that justice will be ensured based on the rule of law and no innocent person will be harassed.
