Leaders of the Palli Bidyut Samity (PBS) Anti-Discrimination Movement have demanded the reinstatement of its sacked officials.

They made the demand in a press conference at Dhaka Reports Unity today (19 October).

Tamjidul Islam, junior technician of Dhaka-1 Zone of Rural Electrification Board, Abdullah Al Hadi, deputy general manager (technical) of Narsingdi-1 Zone, and Shaidul Islam Bhuiya, junior engineer of Narsingdi-2, among others, were present in the press conference.

They also called for bringing the corrupt officials of the Rural Electrification Board under the law.

Six Palli Bidyut officials placed on 3-day remand

Speakers at the press conference claimed that officials of PBS are being harassed and arrested for speaking against the corruption in the Rural Electrification Board and for demanding reform of the system.

On 17 October, 24 officials were permanently suspended without any prior notice and 18 were arrested on "false" cases.

The speakers presented a four-point demand including immediately withdrawing the cases and reinstating 24 sacked officials; reforming the PBS and Rural Electrification Board by merging them into one organisation and regularising the jobs of contractual employees; forming an independent commission with student coordinators to regulate Rural Electrification Board until reforms are completed and bringing corrupt officials of Rural Electrification Board under the law.
