A pair of dolphins have recently washed up at Nijhum Dwip in Noakhali's Hatiya upazila due to a high level of tidal waves caused by the recent deep depression that battered the country.

However, even after the tidal waters receded, the two dolphins were trapped in the area along the banks of the Meghna River due to the current.

After news of the two dolphins getting trapped spread on Friday (30 May), the island's locals crowded on the spot to see them. Some locals recorded videos of the dolphins and shared them on Facebook.

In one of the videos obtained by The Business Standard, some local fishermen were seen trying to guide the dolphins toward the sea.

"Many locals crowded to see the dolphins that were trapped in the Meghna River on the east side of Bandar Tila Bazar of Nijhum Dwip. Fishermen first spotted the dolphins while going out to fish. When we got the news, we also rushed there," said Md Farid, a resident of the island.

He said the fishermen tried to guide them toward the sea but were unsuccessful.

"However, during last night's (31 May) high tide, the dolphins were able to return to the sea," he added.
