Over 40 lakh cases pending in lower courts: Law minister
The government has established 871 courts and created 232 judicial posts to reduce case backlog, he said.
The number of pending cases in Bangladesh's lower courts reached a staggering 4,041,924 as of 31 December 2025, said Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman.
The minister detailed the government's multi-dimensional initiatives aimed at easing this massive judicial backlog, while replying to a written question placed by MP Md Kamrul Hasan from Mymensingh-6 constituency during the 15th sitting of the Parliament's first session today (16 April).
The law minister said the government has already established 871 courts and created 232 judicial posts to reduce case backlog. The process of creating a further 304 judicial posts is underway, while recruitment is ongoing for 150 civil judge posts.
He added that the Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission has recommended the appointment of 708 judicial staff, with another 553 currently in the recruitment phase.
To expedite the trial of important cases, including those related to violence against women and children, a special committee headed by the solicitor has been formed, he said.
District Legal Aid offices have also been strengthened with experienced mediators, and a dedicated hotline, 16699, has been launched to provide free legal assistance.
In addition, cause lists of both lower and higher courts have been made fully available online, allowing litigants to check hearing dates remotely.
The law minister lauded the government's commitment to ensuring fast, transparent, and affordable justice, expressing optimism that these measures will significantly reduce the pressure on courts.
Minister Asaduzzaman highlighted that the government has introduced significant amendments to the Code of Civil Procedure and the Code of Criminal Procedure, including introducing digital summons, online testimony, and simplified case disposal processes.
