Over 100 injured as rival groups clash in Faridpur; homes vandalised, cattle looted
The fights started at three locations in the Balia Bazar area of Gatti union
More than 100 people were injured in a series of clashes between two rival groups over dominance in Faridpur's Saltha upazila today (29 November).
Confirming the matter, Saltha Police Station's officer-in-charge (OC) (Investigation) KM Maruf Hasan Russell said the violence erupted early in the morning.
"After prolonged efforts, the situation was brought under control around 11:45am. Additional police have been deployed to maintain order and prevent further unrest," the OC said.
The fights started at three locations in the Balia Bazar area of Gatti union, involving what locals described as thousands of people from at least 20 villages and leaving multiple homes vandalised and a cattle farm looted.
According to locals, a long-running dispute, reportedly between supporters of BNP leaders Zahid Matubbor and Nuru Matubbor in Gatti union, had intensified over the past few weeks, leading to several confrontations.
Tensions erupted again on Saturday morning when supporters from both sides, armed with local weapons including shields, spears and bamboo sticks, engaged in the altercation.
Witnesses described the area as turning into a "warzone", forcing women and children to flee in panic in search of safer places.
At least 20 houses were vandalised during the clashes, and a farm was ransacked, with 20 cattle and other valuables reportedly looted.
Hospital sources said more than 100 people sustained injuries, while at least 50 severely wounded individuals were admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
