A woman was allegedly held captive and tortured to force her into aborting her unborn child in Munshiganj's Sreenagar.

The victim has been identified as Dipa Begum, 30.

One person, who was reportedly hired from Dhaka to help with the forced abortion, has been detained over the incident, Md Yasin Munshi, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sreenagar Police Station told The Business Standard.

The reported incident occurred at Idris Ali's house in West Singpara village of the Upazila around 2pm today (15 October), according to police officials and locals.

"Upon receiving the news, we arrived at the location and detained a woman named Ambia, 42, who was part of a team brought from Dhaka to perform the abortion. We will take necessary action regarding this incident," OC Yasin said.

According to locals, Ripon Sheikh, the son of Idris Ali from West Singpara village, brought Dipa from Dhaka's Mirpur to his house four days ago. Ripon introduced Dipa as his second wife. Dipa is two months pregnant.

Meanwhile Ripon's first wife Tania Begum, who lives in the same house, admitted that Ripon had kept Dipa confined in the house and tried to force her into aborting the child with the help of two women, including Ambia, hired from Dhaka.

Tania said Dipa was beaten with a hammer, which broke her hands and feet, for refusing to go with the abortion.

Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to the scene and took Dipa to the upazila health complex.

The locals also caught Ambia and handed her over to the police. However, Ripon managed to flee when he noticed the police.

Dr Md Kashfi, the on-duty doctor at the upazila health complex, said Dipa was unable to speak properly due to the injuries. She had fractures in her hands and feet and required advanced medical treatment.
