Old image of student's body propagated as Jubo League man's body

Fact checking body Rumor Scanner in an investigation revealed that an image and a video footage of the body of a student hanging from a tree in 2023 is being propagated as the image of recently recovered body of a Jubo League activist.

In a report published on its website yesterday (28 January), the organisation said recently, a video of a young man hanging from a tree has been circulated on various online platforms, claiming that the body is of a Jubo League activist and that he was killed.

In its investigation, Rumor Scanner found that the image and the video of the body was of an honors student named Shafin Mia whose hanging body was found during the previous government's tenure, on 12 November 2023.

At the beginning of the investigation, a photo was found published on a Facebook group called 'Mithapukur, Rangpur Update Khabor' on 12 November 2023 with the caption "Police recovered the body of an honors student named Shafin in the Ruposhi Damua area of Khoragach Union of Mithapukur Upazila.

The clothes and surroundings of the young man in the video in question are similar to this photo.

The caption of the post claims that the body is that of a young man named Shafin Mia. He was studying in honors at the time. His home is in Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur. It is claimed that he was killed and hung from a mango tree by a pond at that time.

In addition, another photo of the young man from a different angle in the incident published on the same day of that year under the title 'Bodies of 2 people including a student recovered in Mithapukur' can be found on another Facebook page named Online A Rangpur.24. The same information about the young man can be found from the caption of the post.

Later, by searching for relevant keywords, a report was found on the website of the mainstream media Jugantor published on 13 November 2023 under the title 'Allegations of student being killed and then hung in Mithapukur'.

The report reveals that a student named Shafin Mia was allegedly hanged after being killed in Mithapukur that year. The police recovered his body from Ruposhi Bekipara village in Khoragach union of the upazila at that time. Shafin is the son of Sekandar Ali of that village.

In addition, a report titled "Body of Rangpur Carmichael College student hanging from a tree" was found on the website of the private television channel Somoy TV at that time.

It is known from the report that the young man in question, Shafin Mia, was a student of the political science department of Carmichael College in Rangpur.

So, the incident of the murder in question is not recent.

Therefore, the incident of the recovery of the body of a young man in 2023 has been circulated on the internet claiming that it was a recent incident of the murder of a Jubo League worker; which is completely false.
