People from all walks of life paid their final respects to eminent thinker, writer, researcher, educationist and Bangla Academy President Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Haq at the Central Shaheed Minar and the University of Dhaka today (6 July) before his burial.
His namaz-e-janaza was held at the University of Dhaka Central Mosque at 1:40pm, and he was later laid to rest at the Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard in Mirpur.
The scholar's body was taken to the Central Shaheed Minar around 11am, where people from different professions, representatives of literary and cultural organisations and political and social groups paid their tributes.
It was later taken to Aparajeyo Bangla on the Dhaka University campus. However, heavy rain prevented the coffin from being placed at the monument.
Around 12:30pm, the coffin was placed at the main gate of the Faculty of Arts, where the Department of Bangla paid tribute first. The vice-chancellor, pro-vice-chancellors, treasurer, deans of different faculties and teachers of the university also paid their respects.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor ABM Obaidul Islam said Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq was a distinguished intellectual who devoted his life to thinking about the state and society and made significant contributions to the university.
"He will live on through his philosophy and ideas. We will remember him always," he said.
Professor Sirajul Islam, chairman of the Department of Bangla, described him as a principled political philosopher and said Bangladesh had lost one of its foremost intellectuals.
"We will remain committed to honouring his work and remembering him. His passing marks the end of a strong voice of protest in Bangladesh," he said.
Among others, Bangla Academy Director General Professor Mohammad Azam, former Bangla Department chairman Professor Syed Azizul Haque and Faculty of Arts Dean Professor Abul Kalam Sarker also spoke at the programme.
