Manzur Elahi laid to rest at Banani graveyard

Eminent entrepreneur Syed Manzur Elahi was laid to rest at the Banani graveyard in the capital today (13 March), following funeral prayers attended by distinguished individuals and people from all walks of life.
Elahi, chairman of Apex Group, was laid to rest beside his wife, Niloufer Manzur, after the second namaz-e-janaza at Azad Masjid in Gulshan-2 in the afternoon, following the first namaz-e-janaza held around 10:30am on the East West University premises in the capital.
This morning, his body was brought to the headquarters of Mutual Trust Bank PLC, where employees of the private bank and Apex Group paid their respects and bid him farewell.
The body of Syed Manzur Elahi was brought to Dhaka on a Singapore Airlines flight from Singapore around 10:20pm on Wednesday and then taken to his residence at around 11:30pm.
He breathed his last at Gleneagles Hospital in Singapore on Wednesday around 7:30am Bangladesh time. He was suffering from old-age complications. He was 83.
Elahi is survived by his daughter, son, grandchildren, and a host of relatives, friends, and well-wishers.
As a distinguished industrialist and visionary, he established successful businesses and institutions such as Apex Footwear, Apex Tannery, Mutual Trust Bank, Pioneer Insurance, Grey Advertising, East West University, Sunbeams School, Manusher Jonno Foundation, Freedom Foundation, and many others.
He served as the chairman of Apex Group and was also the managing director of International Publications Limited, the parent company of the English daily The Financial Express, where he held the role of publisher as well.
Manzur Elahi was born on 26 September 1942 in Calcutta, British India. His father, Sir Syed Nasim Ali, was the chief justice of undivided Bengal.
After completing his education with a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Dhaka, he briefly worked at British American Tobacco before venturing into business.
He established Manzur Industries in 1972. Four years later, in 1976, he bought a state-owned company, Orient Tannery, and set up Apex Tannery with other partners. As the founding chairman of Apex Footwear Ltd, he transformed the company into one of Bangladesh's largest footwear exporters.
