No extortion allowed on roads during Eid travel, fare violations to incur fines: Minister
The minister also announced that trucks will be banned from using highways for four days during Eid to ease traffic congestion.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam has warned that there will be no scope for extortion on highways during the Eid travel season, and strict action will be taken against any transport operator charging fares above the approved rates.
"During Eid travel, highway police, district and upazila administrations, and transport organisations will remain active. Anyone who collects extra fares or violates rules will face strict action," the minister said while speaking to reporters following a meeting with law enforcement agencies and transport owners at the secretariat today (5 March).
He also warned that anyone charging fares above the fixed rates during Eid will have their route permits cancelled.
"We will be strict on overcharging. Anyone found taking fares above the fixed rates will be fined, and their licences may be cancelled," he said.
The minister also announced that trucks will be banned from using highways for four days during Eid to ease traffic congestion.
To further reduce traffic jams, Robiul Islam said the garment industry and factories will observe a four-phase holiday during the festival.
