NBR introduces email OTP facility for expatriate taxpayers
Applicants are required to submit copies of their passport, national identity card, and copy of visa page, along with their overseas address.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has introduced a new facility allowing expatriate Bangladeshi taxpayers to receive one-time passwords (OTP) via email to complete special registration and reset passwords in the e-Return system.
According to a press release issued today (24 February), the NBR authority said the initiative aims to ease tax return submission for Bangladeshi expatriates who are unable to access OTPs sent to their registered mobile numbers.
Under the new arrangement, expatriate taxpayers seeking email verification must apply from their own email address to ereturn@etaxnbr.gov.bd, providing necessary identification documents and information.
Applicants are required to submit copies of their passport, national identity card, and copy of visa page, along with their overseas address, active foreign mobile or telephone number, and the date they last left Bangladesh.
Following scrutiny and verification of the submitted information, the NBR will verify the applicant's email address. Once verified, taxpayers will be able to receive OTPs via email and use them to reset passwords, complete registration and carry out other e-Return-related activities.
The revenue authority said the online filing system has gained significant traction in the 2025-26 tax year. So far, nearly 3.9 million income tax returns have been submitted online.
The NBR has urged individual taxpayers to file their income tax returns for the 2025-26 tax year through the e-Return system by 28 February 2025.
