Dhaka University authorities today (25 May) celebrated the 125th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam through colourful processions, discussions, and cultural programmes.
The day's events began in the morning with a procession led by DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan.
Teachers, students, officers, and staff gathered at the base of Aparajeyo Bangla and marched to the poet's grave beside the university mosque where they placed floral wreaths and offered prayers.
Later, a commemorative meeting was held at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), where Vice-Chancellor Prof Niaz said Nazrul's literary contributions continue to inspire generations to stand against injustice and uphold equality and peace through unity.
"To understand Nazrul, one must first embrace human values," he said, describing the poet as a symbol of rebellion, love, peace, and versatility.
The vice-chancellor also mentioned that a proposal to name a new residential hall at the university after Kazi Nazrul Islam is under active consideration.
Pro-VC (Administration) Professor Sayma Haque Bidisha and Treasurer Professor M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury also addressed the event.
Director General of Bangla Academy and DU Bangla Department Professor Mohammad Azam delivered the memorial lecture titled "The Mass Uprising of '24: The Legacy of Kazi Nazrul."
The event was conducted by Bangla Department Chairman Professor Serajul Islam (Seraj Salekeen), and included musical performances by students and teachers of the Music Department featuring Nazrul's compositions.
Nazrul Islam, who was awarded the title of National Poet in independent Bangladesh, was buried on the university campus.
