Mongla port corridor can boost Bangladesh-Nepal trade, says envoy

Nepal's Ambassador to Bangladesh, Ghanshyam Bhandari, has said the establishment of direct rail and seaport communication between Nepal and Bangladesh could turn the Mongla port corridor into a viable trade route in South Asia.

He also noted that this would stimulate the economy of Khulna and the southwestern region of Bangladesh.

The ambassador made the remarks at a networking event titled Nepal-Bangladesh Cooperation: Dynamics of Trade, Tourism and Connectivity, held at a hotel in Khulna last night (9 May).

He pointed out that the absence of direct rail links between Nepal and Mongla port raises transport costs, discouraging Nepalese businesses from using it. However, he expressed optimism that improved infrastructure would make the corridor more attractive.

Highlighting opportunities beyond trade, he said both countries share rich natural and cultural heritage and have significant potential for tourism cooperation.

Around 50,000 Bangladeshis visited Nepal last year, and the number is expected to rise to 60,000 this year, he added. He also mentioned that many Nepalese students are currently studying medicine in Bangladesh.

Business leaders from Khulna said increased trade with Nepal is possible through the Mongla port and railway links. They called for joint initiatives to promote tourism centred on the Sundarbans, which they believe could boost the local economy.

The event was also addressed by Additional Divisional Commissioner (Education and ICT) of Khulna Debprosad Pal, Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Zulfiqar Ali Haider, Khulna Khulna Chamber of Commerce and Industry Administrator Nurul Hai Mohammad Anas, Shipping Agent Association President Captain Rafiqul Islam, tour operator Abir Imtiaz, and Khulna Traders owner Syed Zahid Hossain.

The event was organised by the Nepal Embassy in Dhaka to boost communication and partnership between the businessmen of the two countries.
