MJF demands urgent action from authorities to ensure justice for rape victims

Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF), a human rights organisation, has strongly condemned the rise in sexual violence against women and children across Bangladesh.
In a statement issued today (9 March), the foundation demanded immediate action from authorities to ensure justice for victims and prevent further atrocities.
MJF Executive Director Shaheen Anam expressed outrage over the increasing number of rape incidents and criticised the justice system for failing to protect women and children.
"Our justice system and protective measures have failed to safeguard women and children. This failure is utterly unacceptable," she said.
She highlighted the issue of sexual violence perpetrated by close relatives, often referred to as incest, which remains unaddressed due to social stigma and family honour.
"Most victims are not allowed to speak out, allowing predators to act with impunity in a culture of silence," she said, urging society to break this silence and take a stand against such crimes.
MJF reiterated its call for the interim government to establish a National Commission for Children's Affairs.
The organisation emphasised the need for a fair and transparent investigation process, improved coordination among authorities, and stronger child protection measures.
"Children are currently the most vulnerable, with authorities turning a blind eye to their plight," the statement read.
MJF emphasised that these reported cases represent just the "tip of the iceberg," as many victims remain silent due to fear and societal pressure.
Calls for immediate action
MJF urges the government to strengthen child protection, ensure swift law enforcement action, expedite justice, and raise awareness to combat violence against women and children.
As the world observes International Women's Day 2025 under the theme "For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment," MJF described the situation in the country as shameful and called for immediate intervention.
The organisation stands in solidarity with students, activists, and citizens protesting the escalating violence.
MJF urges the government, law enforcement agencies, civil society, and citizens to unite and take urgent action to create a society where women and children can live free from fear and violence.
