Aspiring migrant workers who were unable to secure flights to Malaysia last year protested by staging a sit-in in front of the Probashi Kallyan Bhaban in Dhaka's Eskaton area today (18 May).

Around 200 workers joined the demonstration from 9am, demanding the promised employment opportunities in Malaysia.

The protesters are part of a group of over 17,000 workers who missed the 31 May deadline set by Malaysian authorities last year.

During the sit-in, the protesters blamed recruiting agencies and relevant authorities for failing to provide air tickets on time.

Md Alamgir Hasan, one of the organisers, told TBS, "We demand the immediate migration of all deprived workers. We also urge the government to eliminate syndicates from the Malaysian labour market."

He added that the protest would continue throughout the day.

Addressing the issue last week, Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Adviser Asif Nazrul said, "Some progress has been made. The list of 7,926 people for the first batch has been finalised. They will be given opportunities shortly."
