Model and former Miss Earth Bangladesh winner Meghna Alam, who was arrested in a case lodged with the capital's Dhanmondi Police Station over fraud and extortion, was released from jail today (29 April).

She was released from Kashimpur Females' Central Jail around 6:30pm after a bail order was received, Senior Jail Superintendent Kawalin Nahar told The Business Standard.

Yesterday, Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sanaullah passed the bail order after holding a hearing on a plea.

Earlier on 17 April, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Miah showed her arrested in the case over fraud with a foreign diplomat by luring him into a honeytrap.

Meghna was arrested from her Bashundhara Residential Area flat on 9 April. She was subsequently placed under a 30-day detention order, under the Special Powers Act.

The High Court, however, on 13 April issued a rule, asking the relevant authorities to explain within two weeks why her 30-day detention under the Special Powers Act should not be declared beyond legal jurisdiction.

A High Court division bench of Justice Razik-Al-Jalil and Justice Tamanna Rahman Khalidi passed the order, following a hearing on a writ petition filed in this connection.
