Man sentenced to death for murdering wife over dowry
The tribunal recorded testimonies from nine witnesses before delivering the verdict.
A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to death for murdering his wife by pouring boiling water on her during a dowry dispute in Kamrangirchar 20 years ago.
The convict was identified as Sanaullah.
Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 in Dhaka delivered the verdict on Monday (17 August). The court also fined the convict, Sanaullah, Tk1 lakh.
Public Prosecutor Ershad Alam George said Sanaullah was present in court during the sentencing and was later sent back to jail on a warrant.
The tribunal also ordered the district magistrate to recover the fine by selling the convict's movable and immovable properties and hand the proceeds to the victim's family.
Ten people, including Sanaullah, were named in the case.
Following the investigation, police pressed charges against Sanaullah, while nine other accused were acquitted as the charges against them could not be proved.
According to the case documents, Sanaullah married Rubina Akter Pinki on 18 November 2005. He allegedly tortured her over dowry demands.
On 2 May 2006, he beat Rubina with a cane and poured boiling water over her body, causing severe burns to her chest and stomach. She was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital but later died from her injuries.
Rubina's mother, Rabia Akter, filed a murder case with Kamrangirchar Police Station, naming Sanaullah and nine others.
Police later submitted a chargesheet against Sanaullah.
