The incident took place at Basantapur, a village near the Indian border under Adarsha Sadar upazila.
A man hacked his mother and younger brother to death in Cumilla this morning (17 November) following a dispute over his reported involvement in drug peddling, police said.
The incident took place at Basantapur, a village near the Indian border under Adarsha Sadar upazila.
The deceased were identified as Rahela Begum, 65, wife of late Azgar Ali, and her younger son Kamal Hossain, 35. The accused, Billal Hossain, has been absconding since the incident. Police have detained his wife, Aklima Khatun, for questioning.
Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mohinul Islam said Billal had long been involved in drug trading, and the murders occurred after Kamal attempted to stop him.
He added that the family had also been embroiled in a longstanding land dispute.
According to locals, Billal returned home with drugs this morning. Kamal then asked his elder brother not to bring drugs into the house, which led to a heated argument. Billal then went inside, fetched a knife and attacked Kamal. When their mother tried to intervene, she was also attacked. Kamal died on the spot, while Rahela Begum died on the way to hospital.
The bodies have been sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
