Fuel distribution system 'collapsed', petrol pump owners warn of closures amid supply strain
The Petrol Pump Owners Association has warned that the country's fuel distribution system has "completely collapsed," citing an unprecedented surge in demand and supply constraints faced by dealers.
Association President Sajjad Karim Kabul said demand for fuel sales at petrol pumps has risen to nearly 100 times the available stock at many outlets, putting immense pressure on pump owners and employees.
He said the state-owned fuel marketing companies — Padma, Meghna and Jamuna — are unable to supply fuel to their dealers beyond normal levels due to various constraints.
"As a result, considering the intense pressure from customers and the safety of employees, petrol pump owners are finding no option but to keep pumps closed," Kabul said.
According to the association, many pump owners are already deciding to shut down operations due to security concerns and their inability to meet what they described as "uncontrolled demand" from customers.
The situation has emerged as a major challenge for the new government, the association said, warning that the crisis could worsen if immediate and effective steps are not taken to stabilise fuel supply.
The Petrol Pump Owners Association issued the statement while expressing concern over the current fuel supply situation in the country.
