Lawyers in Chattogram have raised questions about the police's involvement in Tuesday's violence on the Chattogram court premises and the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif, with suspicions that the police might have been complicit in the entire event.

At a human chain organised by the Law Alumni Association of the International Islamic University Chittagong on the court premises today (28 November), leaders of the Chittagong District Bar Association questioned the police inactivity after former Iskcon leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was placed in a prison van, and how he managed to get a hand microphone.

They demanded the resignation of the police commissioner over the incident.

Chittagong District Bar Association President Advocate Nazim Uddin Chowdhury said, "I saw in the newspapers that Chinmoy Das used a hand microphone from the prison van to speak and encourage the protest. I urge that he be made the prime accused in all cases. If not, we will not accept it.

"The remnants of a fascist government still exist within the police. On the day Alif was killed, there was adequate police, army, and BGB presence in front of the district commissioner's office. Why were they not called?"

Advocate Ahad Mustafa, president of Premier University Law Alumni Association, said, "I do not know why the administration was silent that day. Why was my brother dragged and killed by a terrorist group? I demand justice for my brother's murderer. No lawyer will represent the murderers."

Riyaz Uddin Chowdhury, president of Southern University Law Alumni Association, "We demand exemplary punishment for the killers. Alongside this, we request that Iskcon's activities be banned, and we appeal to everyone not to support the murderers. We stand with the cause."

During the human chain, the attending lawyers demanded that the hearing of the sedition case against Chinmoy Krishna Das, scheduled for 3 December, should not proceed. The lawyer leaders also expressed solidarity with the demand.
