Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury takes oath as chief justice
President Shahabuddin appointed him as the new chief justice on 23 December.
Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury today (28 December) took oath as the 26th chief justice of Bangladesh.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath at Bangabhaban at 10:30am.
Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, among others, attended the oath-taking ceremony.
Earlier, on 23 December, President Shahabuddin appointed him as the new chief justice.
Syed Refaat Ahmed retired as chief justice yesterday.
Born on 18 May 1961, Chief Justice Zubayer is the son of the late AFM Abdur Rahman Chowdhury, who also served as a judge of the Supreme Court.
Obtaining LLB (honours) and LLM degrees from the University of Dhaka, he did a master's degree from the United Kingdom on international law.
He started his career as a lawyer in the district judges' court in 1985 and at the High Court (HC) in 1987.
On August 27, 2003, he was appointed as an additional judge of the HC Division, with his position made permanent two years later.
President Shahabuddin appointed him as a justice of the Appellate Division on 12 August 2024, and he took the oath the following day, on 13 August.
According to the age limit, Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury will serve until 18 May 2028.
The Appellate Division now also includes Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, Justice Md Rezaul Haque, Justice S M Emdadul Haque, Justice A K M Asaduzzaman and Justice Farah Mahbub.
