Kushtia woman kills herself after 'strangling daughter to death'
The woman, 25, had been suffering from mental distress for some time due to family disputes and financial hardship, according to police and local sources.
A woman in Kushtia's Daulatpur upazila strangled her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter with a rope before taking her own life, police said.
The tragic incident stemmed from mental distress caused by family disputes, financial hardship, and the child's disability, according to police.
The incident occurred around 6:30pm on Thursday (6 November) in Insaf Nagar village under Ramkrishnopur union.
The deceased were identified as Reshma Khatun, 25, wife of Saudi Arabia-based expatriate Rahidul Islam, and their two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Lamia.
According to locals, Reshma had long been struggling with domestic unrest and financial constraints. Her only daughter, Lamia, was born with disabilities, which deepened her emotional turmoil.
On Thursday, Reshma strangled her daughter with a rope before taking her own life by hanging from the ceiling, according to police.
Neighbours said they became alarmed after receiving no response from the house for a long time. Looking through a window, they saw Reshma hanging. They broke open the door and found both mother and child dead before informing the police.
Upon receiving the information, police from Daulatpur Police Station recovered the bodies and took them to the station.
On Friday (7 November), the bodies were sent to Kushtia General Hospital for autopsy. They were later handed over to the family in the afternoon following post-mortem examinations.
Daulatpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Solaiman Sheikh said, "Initial investigation suggests that Reshma took the step due to family disputes, financial crisis, and mental stress over her child's condition."
