KU students occupy govt fish farm office, declare it 'Shaheed Mir Mughdha Hall'

As part of their ongoing protest demanding resolution of long-standing issues, students of Khulna University (KU) have occupied the office of the government-run Fish Seed Production Farm in Gallamari, Khulna, and declared it 'Shaheed Mir Mughdha Hall.'
The students gathered at Hadi Chattar inside the university this afternoon (10 August) and marched to the farm office.
After holding a rally there, they gave the officials and staff a 10-minute ultimatum to leave the premises. Once the officials vacated the site, the students hung a banner reading "Shaheed Mir Mughdha Hall" on the main gate. They staged a sit-in at the location for nearly three hours.
Md Mehedi Hasan, farm manager of the Fish Seed Production Farm, alleged that government property has been damaged. He stated that higher authorities have been informed and they are awaiting further instructions.
The students claimed that the 10.35-acre farm located within the university campus has long been an obstacle to resolving the university's housing crisis, expanding research facilities, and infrastructural development.
Although the student population exceeds 7,000, the university has only five residential halls, providing accommodation to just 30% of students, they said.
Earlier, in November 2024, the students submitted a memorandum to the Secretary of Fisheries and Livestock and organised various protests and human chains. The university authorities have also made several requests to the Ministries of Education and Fisheries for land transfer.
In March this year, Adviser to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Farida Akhtar had acknowledged the students' demands as reasonable and promised a solution.
