A monument commemorating the martyrs of the July Uprising of 2024 will be built at Osmani Udyan in Dhaka.
Local Government and Rural Development Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan laid the foundation of the "July Monument" today (12 October).
Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Md Shahjahan Mia and Local Government Division Secretary Md Rezaul Maksud Zahedi were also present on the occasion.
The monument, costing Tk46.40 crore and funded by the Local Government Division, aims to preserve the memory of the martyrs and keep the spirit of July alive for future generations.
The July Monument will feature a circular altar, flanked by eight rectangular perforated columns on either side, with a separate circular column rising 90 feet in the centre. The structure will have two entrances, an epitaph at the entrance, and the surrounding area will be landscaped with Krishnachura saplings.
At the event, Adviser Asif Mahmud said, "The memory of the martyrs and the history of July have been highlighted with utmost importance in the design and construction of the July Monument."
He added that questions raised about the project's budget are "politically motivated", not concerns over public funds, noting that such scrutiny did not exist during the previous "fascist" rule.
He emphasised that the government is committed to preserving the sacrifices of the July Uprising martyrs and the injured for generations to come.
Dhaka South City Administrator Md Shahjahan Mia said, "When no one had taken the initiative to preserve the memory of the July Uprising, Dhaka South City Corporation had undertaken this task under the guidance of the local government adviser."
He also noted that the piling work of the monument is in its final stages, with completion expected by December this year.
During the ceremony, the Adviser Asif Mahmud offered prayers in memory of the martyrs and planted a medicinal tree.
Senior officials from the Local Government Division and Dhaka South City Corporation were also present.
