Jubo League leader tied to pole and beaten over theft allegation in Sunamganj; video goes viral

A local Jubo League leader was tied to a pole and beaten by villagers over allegations of theft in Sunamganj's Tahirpur upazila.
Videos of the incident, which took place in Saderkhola village under the South Borodol union, went viral on social media, sparking widespread discussion.
The man, Isha Mia (35), is the joint general secretary of South Borodol union Jubo League and son of Sayed Ali.
According to local sources, the incident occurred after a theft at a shop owned by one Rahim Mia near Haji MA Zaher High School on the night of 31 May. The following morning, villagers allegedly caught Isha Mia on suspicion of the theft, tied his hands and feet to a post in Rahim Mia's house, and beat him.
Locals claim that during the assault, Isha confessed to the crime, and some of the stolen items were recovered from him.
Despite being informed, his family reportedly did not respond. Eventually, local Union Parishad member Ropon Mia and other community elders intervened and secured his release.
Nur Alam of Amtail village said, "Isha Mia is a notorious thief. There isn't a single mosque in the area where he hasn't committed theft. He has even stolen money and jewelry from my house. People from 8-10 surrounding villages cannot sleep peacefully at night because of him."
Union Parishad member Ropon Mia said they had received numerous complaints about Isha's involvement in thefts over a long period.
"In the recent case, he confessed and returned some of the stolen items. He was released after he signed a written statement," he added.
Meanwhile, Tahirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Delwar Hossain said no formal complaint has been lodged with the police regarding this incident.
"Taking the law into one's own hands is illegal. We will take appropriate action if a complaint is filed," he said.
