JU students suspend movement but remain in halls

Students protesting at Jahangirnagar University (JU) have suspended their movement, but they announced that they will not leave the university's halls.

The students announced this at a press conference at JU's transport premises on Tuesday.

On behalf of the students, Nawshin Adiba, a student of the 45th batch of the Department of Drama and Dramatics, said, "The university administration has accepted most of our demands. Therefore, for the time being, we are suspending our movement. However, considering the safety and suffering of the students, we have decided to stay in the halls."

The students added that they will protest again if the university administration puts pressure on the students to leave the halls.

Earlier, on Friday night, locals attacked the university students. They gathered hundreds of villagers, after making announcements from the loudspeakers of the local mosque, following an altercation between students and the villagers over a cricket tournament in Gerua village adjacent to Jahangirnagar University. 

At least 50 students of the university were injured in the incident. In protest of the attack, the students broke open the gates of all 16 university halls on Monday. 

The university administration filed an anonymous case against 250 students at Ashulia Police Station on Monday evening. The university authorities also issued a circular at 1pm on Monday night, ordering the students to leave the halls by 10am Tuesday.
