JU students demand hall reopening after being attacked by Savar locals

Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) are protesting to open the halls following a clash with the locals where at least 30 students were reportedly injured.

Earlier on Friday evening, students engaged in a clash with locals in the Gerua area adjacent to the university over a cricket tournament.

Salauddin Khan, a student of JU 43rd batch confirmed the matter to The Business Standard and said, "A feud started between JU students and some of the locals during a cricket tournament about three days back."
"The host committee tried to resolve the dispute by setting the two sides up for a meeting on Friday. However, it went sour as the JU students left," he said.
On Friday evening, a group of people incited the locals using the loudspeaker of the local mosque and urged them to arm with 'whatever they have' to attack students to 'protect their honour'.
Later the armed locals carried out attacks on student messes in Islamnagar, Ambagan, Radio Colony and Gerua Bazar area.
The clashes continued till 2 am when the students fought back. Three motorcycles were also vandalised.
Additional police members were deployed to control the situation.
