Jhenaidah police recruit 33 constables on merit
For years, a police job was often associated with bribes, brokers and lobbying. That perception, however, is beginning to change.
In Jhenaidah, 33 young men and women have been selected for the post of trainee recruit constable solely on the basis of merit and eligibility.
After receiving the news, some broke down in tears while speaking to their mothers over the phone, while others embraced their fathers in joy.
Rifat Hasan, a resident of Beparipara in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila, called his mother immediately after hearing that he had been selected.
His mother, Rowshan Ara, broke down in tears on the other end of the phone.
Rifat's father is a truck driver, while his mother supports the family through sewing work.
For someone from such a modest background, getting a job in the police was a moment of fulfilment.
Rifat was not alone.
Arifin Hasan Abir, Ripa Khatun and several others were also seen shedding tears of joy after being selected.
Most of the recruits come from families of farmers, day labourers, truck drivers or other low-income backgrounds.
Some reached this stage after years of struggle without their fathers.
The atmosphere also turned emotional among the guardians.
Many parents were seen crying after seeing their children secure police jobs without paying any money.
According to district police sources, there were 33 vacant posts for trainee recruit constables in Jhenaidah.
A total of 2,087 candidates applied for the posts.
After the physical ability test, 268 candidates were selected for the written examination.
Of them, 54 passed the written test.
Finally, 33 candidates were selected on merit after viva voce and psychological tests.
Five more candidates have been kept on the waiting list.
Jhenaidah Superintendent of Police Md Mahfuz Afzal said the recruitment process was completed with complete transparency and on the basis of merit.
