Jamaat MP Mardia proposes converting 'Bangabandhu Corners' into 'Liberation War and July Corners'

A Jamaat-e-Islami MP has proposed renovating the "Bangabandhu and Liberation War Corners" established in government primary schools and libraries and converting them into "Liberation War and July Corners".

Reserved women's seat MP Mardia Mumtaz made the proposal while asking a supplementary question to Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury in Parliament today (7 September).

Mardia said a previous government project had established 'Mujib Corners' at government and private libraries and primary schools at a cost of around Tk22.5 crore.

Although the signs and titles of the corners were removed after August 2024, their structures remain unused and unprotected at many locations, she said.

Each corner had been supplied with eight books on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, including one on his favourite foods, she added.

"If these corners are renovated and arrangements are made to present the history of the Liberation War and the July uprising, it would be beneficial for the people of the country," Mardia said.

In response, Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury said the government would review the proposal and take necessary steps if the MP provided a list of the libraries concerned.

He said the country has numerous government and private libraries, from district and upazila levels to villages.

"The list of these libraries will be collected and the necessary steps will be taken after discussions," the minister added.
