Jamaat ameer warns of 'electoral genocide' if polls, referendum held together
Responding to queries about whether Jamaat has softened its stance on proportional representation (PR), he said the party remains firm on its long-standing demand
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has warned that holding the national election and a public referendum on the same day could lead to what he termed an "electoral genocide," though he mentioned that his party would not create any crisis centring the polls.
"We do not view a referendum on election day positively. We have already said that combining the two could pose serious risks to the election," he told reporters at Parade Ground in Chattogram during a visit this afternoon (22 November).
Responding to queries about whether Jamaat has softened its stance on proportional representation (PR), he said the party remains firm on its long-standing demand.
"We are focused on positive initiatives for the nation. We do not have time for unnecessary criticism. Our position is clear, and if we come to power, we will implement proportional representation for the people's benefit, Inshallah," he said.
Speaking about concerns over the lack of a level playing field, the Jamaat chief called for collective preparation.
"The playing field is not level. We must create one for everyone. This election must be held; otherwise, the country will face a crisis. And we will not allow any crisis, Inshallah."
Shafiqur also dismissed the idea of holding local government elections before the national polls, calling it impractical. "We never make unrealistic demands and will not start now," he added.
The Jamaat ameer ruled out joining any traditional electoral alliances but said the party would seek broader political understanding with various groups.
Asked whether he anticipates Jamaat victories in all Chattogram constituencies, he replied, "I will not give a message of Jamaat's victory; I will give a message of the people's victory. My aim is not Jamaat's victory but the people's."
Shafiqur Rahman arrived at Parade Ground by helicopter around 3:45pm, where he later spoke to the media.
