Jaishankar arrived in Dhaka yesterday to attend Khaleda Zia’s funeral.
Dhaka sees Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's visit to Bangladesh as a positive development, Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain said today (1 January).
Speaking at a press briefing at his office, Touhid said the visit reflected India's respect for former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who passed away on Tuesday morning.
Jaishankar arrived in Dhaka yesterday to attend Khaleda Zia's funeral.
Asked whether the visit could help ease "strained relations" between the two neighbouring countries, the foreign adviser said only time would reveal its impact.
Touhid Hossain noted that Khaleda Zia was not only a widely popular leader in Bangladesh but also a highly respected figure across South Asia.
Representatives from several South Asian countries attended her funeral yesterday, he added.
Meanwhile, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and signed the condolence book, expressing deep sorrow over the former prime minister's death.
"Our thoughts are with her family and the people of Bangladesh," he wrote.
